How to pack a Rucsac

Making sure you can get to your kit easily, but that the load you’re carrying is stable, is one of the great dilemmas of carrying a heavy load (10kg or more).

Packing your rucsac will depend on many things – what you’re carrying, what activities you will be doing and, of course, your personal preference – but here are some basic ways to pack which you may like to try next time you’re heading out.

Heavy items depend on your activity and location but usually include water, food, fuel and a stove. Lighter items such as clothing, sleeping bags and tents have a lot of bulk but not a lot of weight.

Packing your heavy items at the top of the rucsac makes the load easier to carry as the weight is over your centre of gravity, but only consider this on easy terrain because it can easily affect your balance.

If you have a day planned with a lot of movement, maybe skiing, climbing or taking on rough ground, you may want to pack the weight low in your rucsac. This will make the weight more stable and will help you balance better.

Packing your heavy items vertically in the rucsac is a really effective way of getting the load close to your body to give you the best stability while still keeping everything accessible.
